The difference is abysmal in terms of resolution and data depth.
- The 16S method (Traditional): It can only detect bacteria and archaea by sequencing a small region of a specific gene. It gives you a general idea (the genus), but it doesn't tell you exactly what each tool does.
- Shotgun Metagenomics (Vivabioma): It randomly sequences all the genes of all present organisms. This allows us to detect not only bacteria, but also fungi, viruses, archaea and parasites.
Furthermore, Shotgun allows us to perform functional studies: we can see if your ecosystem has the necessary genes to produce neurotransmitters (like GABA), essential vitamins or protective metabolites. It is, in essence, the difference between knowing that there are people in an office (16S) and knowing exactly what work each employee is doing (Shotgun).
